The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to start the season to four games with a 1-1 draw against McHenry County on Saturday afternoon at Kleine Field.

The Chargers (2-0-2 overall, 0-0-2 Region IV) struck first in the 15th minute as Arlen Navarro (Miami, Fla./Sports Leadership & Management) intercepted a Scots (0-3-1) pass and sent a perfect lead pass to Pedro Henrique Gomes (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Objetivo Ribeirao Pires), who sent a shot inside the right post for a 1-0 lead.

Sandburg dominated possession for much of regulation but was unable to extend its lead and put McHenry County away. It came back to haunt the Chargers when the Scots’ Jason Mendez was taken down in the box and converted a penalty to tie the game at 1-1 in the 85th minute.

The four best scoring chances in overtime belonged to the Chargers in the second extra period. Sandburg had a 3-on-1 opportunity but had its shot attempt blocked. Shortly after, Lucas Rodrigues (Miami, Fla./Immaculata LaSalle) rocketed a shot from the top of the box that the McHenry County keeper was able to jump up and get a glove on.

With 5:40 to go, Sandburg freshman Kyle Neacy (Bunbury, Australia/SEDA) sent a free kick from just inside midfield off the crossbar, and Gomes’ shot from 40 yards out landed on top of the net as time expired.

The Chargers had 15 shots on goal and 10 corner kicks in the match, compared to seven shots on goal and four corners for the Scots. Iker Sanchez (Miami, Fla./Immaculata LaSalle) made five saves in net for Sandburg.
